Sentinel Sports Final

Wednesday, August 16, 2023

Now that Graham Mertz has the job in Gainesville, he's not running from the criticism or the spotlight ... Once Lionel Messi plays a full MLS season, how many goals will he have? ... Poor James Harden (not financially, of course). There's a new CBA clause that rescinds pending free agency if he doesn't report to Sixers training camp. Players don't have the same leverage in the NBA in this regard. ... The NBA is trying to go the route of soccer with an in-season competition with a $500K prize for each player on the winning team. Not necessarily motivation for stars with deals the size of Department of Defense contracts, but those making minimum salaries should welcome it. This will be part of the 82-game schedule after all. Not extra games. Bigger question: Will today's bigger, stronger, faster but not more durable players still be allowed to call in with the blue flu and "rest" to kill the thrill of the inaugural event? ... This Michael Oher thing has been brewing for more than a decade. His last year in Baltimore in 2013, when I first walked into the Ravens locker room during training camp for NBC to do interviews, I was told by my predecessor: "No matter what, no matter the circumstances, do NOT mention Blind Side to him. Ever."
