National teachers union takes over Orange's local union

The move by the American Federation of Teachers has likely generated an enormous amount of concern after it used a "rarely exercised" power to gain control over the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association Wednesday. The AFT relieved Diana Moore, the local union president and the local board of directors from their leadership posts at the Orange County union, which represents some 13,000 county educators. [More]

Victoria Siegel autopsy: Fatal overdose of methadone, sertraline

The Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office has ruled that the 18-year-old woman overdosed on two separate prescription drugs, according to a newly released report. Victoria is the daughter of "Queen of Versailles" star Jackie Siegel. The young woman was found unresponsive in her family's Windermere mansion in June. [More]

Summer storms blamed for Lake County damage; 2 struck by lightning

A late afternoon storm tore through part of Lake County Wednesday afternoon, toppling trees and leaving a trail of damage. Authorities said the storm was likely caused by a microburst, which brought strong winds and heavy downpours. About two hours later, another round of rough weather was blamed when two women were struck by lightning near Lake Jessamine in Orange County. [Lake County damage | Lightning strike]

More millennials living at home, and you can't blame the economy

A new report by the Pew Research Center says the nation's 18- to 34-year-old population is less likely to be living independently of their families and establishing their own households than they were during the recession. And since 2010, the percentage of millennials moving back in with their parents has increased from 24% to 26%, the data shows.  [More]
