Sentinel Sports Final

Wednesday, May 17, 2023

The Magic didn't steal the show at the NBA draft lottery by jumping up into the top 3 for the best can't-miss prospects, but owning two of the top 11 isn't bad, either. Giannis Antetokounmpo was picked 15th (outside the lottery). The big question is this: Do they really need two more young players, or will they trade down for more assets or trade at least one pick for proven vets who can help them win now? it depends on the quality of the players available outside the top 5. Teams deal draft picks if they 're already full of youth they believe in. The Magic appear to be at the next stage. .... Do you remember Scottie Pippen's terrible decision when his contact was up with the Bulls after winning the title? He signed a 7-year, $18 million deal as NBA contracts began to explode. Well, the ACC did far worse by locking its schools into a media rights deal through 2036. Hello, has anyone at the ACC ever heard of an opt-out clause? Today 's pro contracts are full of them. Miami and FSU could've hired John Gibbons (the stuttering attorney, My Cousin Vinny, 1992) to negotiate a better deal. Any long-term deal needs an opt-out aka escape hatch to adjust to changing circumstances. ... NBA owners have become impatient, firing coaches who won them championships less than five years ago (Nick Nurse, Mike Budenholzer). But the Sixers giving former Magic coach Doc Rivers the boot is one of the few that makes sense. Great career record? Fine. Championship coach? That was 2008 so it basically doesn't count. To stay employed long-term in this league, you've not only get results but a coach must not be set in his ways. "We play the way we play. If we do it harder, we'll be OK." Guess who used that logic? Scott Brooks. Repeatedly. What head coaching job does he have right now? You guessed it. None..... Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is 180 degrees from that. His team, the lowest seed alive at No. 8, upset the No. 1 seed Bucks and is in the conference finals. That's what it takes to stay employed as a coach like he has been since 2008. Constant re-invention. Game 1 vs. Boston is tonight.

Magic will choose 6th and 11th in next month's NBA draft

Orlando acquired the No. 11 pick from the Chicago Bulls, who owed the Magic a first-round pick from the March 2021 trade that sent Nikola Vucevic and Al-Farouq Aminu to Chicago for Wendell Carter Jr., Otto Porter Jr., a 2021 first-round pick (Franz Wagner, at No. 8) and an additional first-rounder.

Frustrated with ACC, FSU and Miami are jealous of UCF | Commentary

Most legal experts will tell you that conference grant-of-rights contracts are about as ironclad as they come. It would reportedly cost a $120 million exit fee for an ACC team to buy out of the grant-of-rights agreement and join another league and, even then, the ACC would still own the defecting school's TV rights until 2036.
