Sentinel Sports Final

Wednesday, September 27, 2023

Here's an inconvenient truth about sports teams twisting the arms of municipalities to build them a new billion-dollar facility every 20 years (and I studied this extensively for a project for a national publication in the early 2000s): The economic impact figures tend to be skewed. Instead of spending their money on season tickets, people go out to dinner more often; buy more expensive gifts for holidays; are more inclined to spend on other forms of entertainment. The money doesn't stop circulating. It just shows up in other areas locally. But you don't want to be the city that lost an NFL team like Jacksonville. That's just the reality, and the political ramifications are huge. ...If Billy Napier can win at Kentucky, it validates the win vs. Tennessee and combs over the stuggle vs. Charlotte as just one of those blips on the screen every team has (see Bama vs. USF). ... UCF 's national ranking against the run after three games shows why those early rankings mean little. I haven't seen men get run over the way K-State 's DJ Giddens trucked the Knights' defense since the last season of 90-Day Fiance. Or was that Love After Lockup? ... Who you got for MLB awards?

Hey, Jacksonville, save yourself a lot of time and trouble and build Jaguars a new stadium | Commentary

Column: Ryder Cup is in America's head. But it's in Europe's blood

The Americans have won more majors. The Europeans have won more Ryder Cups. There's really no connection, except that it might explain why the Americans always seem to be the favorite on paper, and Team Europe has more often left with the Ryder Cup.

MLB awards races: Are Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani MVPs? Will Dave Roberts get his due?

Remember this about the annual awards doled out in Major League Baseball: Voting is completed before the playoffs begin. No postseason heroics figure into MVP, Cy Young or rookie of the year winners. Same with manager of the year, which almost always results in the award going to a skipper whose team finished short of a World Series title.
