Sentinel Sports Final

Friday, September 8, 2023

Just a year ago, Ben Shelton was leaving the University of Florida to turn pro in tennis. Today, he's opposite Novak Djokovic in a U.S. Open men's semifinal (Yikes!!!) while Coco Gauff made the women's final (the first American teen since 2001). ... High school football ramps up with Week 3 and ex-Gators receiver Kadarius Toney (with the Kansas City Chiefs, for now) might get demoted there with his inability to catch anything that hit him in his hands in the opening loss to Detroit. He single handedly made MVP Patrick Mahomes look ordinary. ... The unfortunate tweet from UCF during the Kent State game shows how an innocent attempt at humor can go horribly wrong. How likely is the person who wrote that tweet about calling the National Guard is in their 20s and never learned about what happend in 1970? That's an indictment of our educational system, yes, but intent matters. Read Bianchi 's take about the Shannon Sharpe reference and you'll understand that knee-jerk responses calling for that person 's head isn't the answer, either. Know what social media doesn't have that traditional media has? Editors. They're gatekeepers to save writers from gaffes such as this. It's the downside of instant gratification and access.
